The Action - Rolled Gold

June 26, 2008

from allmusic.com:

The term “lost classic” is applied liberally and often erroneously to unreleased recordings that resurface years later in a maelstrom of hype. However, for the forgotten mod rock also-rans the Action, the term is not only justified, it is painfully bittersweet. On par with such classics of the era as The Who Sell Out or Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake but more focused than either, the Action’s Rolled Gold goes beyond “lost classic” — it is the influential masterpiece no one was ever allowed to hear.

the jams therein were originally recorded in 1967 but weren’t released until 2002. which is a shame because these dudes were some truly rulin’ mods. checka-check it out y’all!

hangin’ with bangs

June 22, 2008

the other day, Royal Bangs from Knoxville stayed at my house (aka The Parkerdome). they’re such sick awesome bros that I can’t believe I got to kick it with all 5 of’m. and their music is pretty crescent-fresh too. they’re on tour all over the east coast right now so go see’m if you can. I’d say it’s definitely worth an hour’s drive, but two may be pushin’ it (what with gas prices and all). anyhoo, you can read about their adventures in Chattanooga on their tour blog.

if you still need more stuff to listen to, I’ve put some fresh jams on my muxtape. listen + learn!

it’s still rock’n'roll to me

May 28, 2008

you know who doesn’t get enough respect nowadays? billy effin’ joel.

he just rules, man. I’ve updated my muxtape with some of my favorite BJ jams that hopefully you’re already intimately familiar with (but if not, now’s the time to get your billy joel-related issues taken care of).

and speakin’ of rock’n'roll, my band thee something brothers is puttin’ out our first full length CD this friday.

it’s going down at JJ’s Bohemia in downtown Chattanooga and I would be just stoked if you were to come by and check us out. you can hear the whole album online for free at this secret listening booth but it’s going away after the show so don’t blow it.

strength shoes

May 20, 2008

hey man, can I ask you something real quick?

wtf is up with these shoes??? they look like just a regular pair of sneakers, but on the front is some kinda hard foam disc attached to toe by a small riser. and on the bottom is the word, “strength.”

I tried them on and they actually did make me feel a bit stronger even though I had trouble balancing on the disc. some guy saw we voguing with these things and start laughing out loud (LOLing) but I stepped on him right away. if life were a Metroidvania game, I’d say these shoes give you +3 bonus to your STR and the cost of 1 point to your SPD. seriously though, do these things have some kinda practical application? does anyone have any theories?

(speaking of Metroidvania, check out Cave Story. it’s pretty fun.)

the lighting was bad, the crowd was thin, and the performers were drunk, but the songs were pretty good. here’s a whole Thee Something Brothers show from a few weeks ago:

dummies + money

April 21, 2008

this church in Chattanooga called Graceworks Church had a whole pile of cash laying around and, having already bought all the office supplies they’ll need until jesus comes back, built a big-ass 110 foot cross overlooking the interstate and the local used CD and books store. I wonder if there were any dissenting voices at the meeting that decided to build this thing. I mean, adults built this! adults who’ve read the bible and sure as hell better cough up a dollar or two when they get accosted by homeless people downtown.

anyways, I was on my way to the used CD shop today to buy “Powerslave” by Iron Maiden until I finally had the opportunity to set mine eyes upon this big-ass cross. behold! I immediately hopped back in the car and drove home and threw out all of my pot and condoms and Iron Maiden CDs because I wasn’t going to need them where I was going (heaven)!

…and this bird you cannot change.

April 20, 2008

hey there, low lifes! just droppin’ by to let you know that I’ve updated my muxtape with some fresh jams. make sure you check out that cover of “Freebird” by Radiohead. yes, RADIOHEAD. I didn’t believe it at first either but it’s unmistakably them.

in other news, if you hear a jam on somebody’s muxtape, you can use this greasemonkey script to save the mp3. AWESOME.
